This is an original Photograph taken 2005. Above the gold dome of the capitol building this moon seemed to balance on the tip. That’s real gold on the dome. It’s gold mined in Dahlonega, Georgia where, back in 1829, gold was discovered. In fact, the word Dahlonega means yellow in the Cherokee language. The Native Americans knew that gold was in those hills. The dome, however, wasn’t always layered in gold. It took until 1957 that the idea was conceived of laying down thin sheets of gold mined in the North Georgia hills. Gold was again laid on the dome in 1979 to keep it gleaming. In September 2024, the dome was slated to get new gold to make needed repairs some time before 2026.
